Mid-Columbia Pride Celebration: Headliner & Grand Marshall: Vickie Shaw

Vickie Shaw...

looks like the woman next door ... All-American with blond hair, lipstick and polished nails. Once she opens her mouth, you'll know she was born and raised in Texas and you'll never stop laughing. After eighteen years of marriage and three kids, something was missing in Vickie's life...

"People were always coming up to me and saying, 'You should do stand-up comedy.'

Vickie did become a stand-up comic and came out as a lesbian at the same time.

'I would've come out as a stand-up, but it would've killed my parents.'

VYC Portland PRIDE trip 2008

Some quotes from youth who went on the trip this weekend:

“Pride was SO FUN!!” Every single second and moment was an adventure. Pride has shown me not to be afraid of who and what you are. The drag queens were so FABULOSO!

I felt liberated and free like there was people that were just like me…people all there to support me. There were protesters there and when they got shot down by a thousand people it felt amazing and empowering. I guess it shows that little people can make a big difference.

“The best things in life are unseen. That’s why we close our eyes when we kiss, cry and dream.”

“Pride” does what it says..it allows you to be in a place wth no stigma against what society tells you to be ashamed of, no one there cares about anything but if you’re smiling and if you’re having a good time. You stop being a student or banker or a gay, or a straight or a girl/boy and are just a person. PRIDE=absence of shame.

GSA Summer Leadership Training—Available NOW!!

Mar 14, 2008
GLSEN Washington State and Washington GSA Network summer leadership training will be August 4 & 5 at the Flying Horseshoe Ranch in Cle Elum, Washington!
We are looking for local GSA leaders to take part of our summer leadership training! If you get selected to be a part of our state leadership team you'll work with other GSA leaders from all over the state!

The Washington State GSA Network Leadership Team is a youth-led group that will work together to build bridges between GSA clubs and other community groups throughout Washington State. During this leadership training, students will develop leadership skills and help to build peer support through programs, workshops, and trainings.

The Washington State GSA Network has 10 unique regions. The goal is to have GSA leaders from EACH region represented at our summer leadership training. With the state broken up into regions, established GSA groups can help

each other become stronger and help those GSA groups that have just started or are emerging.

These students will take active roles in their communities and will be available for trainings, assisting with the launch of new GSA groups, assisting established GSA groups, and help plan and participating in community and regional events. The youth selected will also work with each other! Each region in the state is different, which reflects the diverse communities from which we are from.

Make a difference in your school or community, work with outstanding adults and youth from around the state, and learn leadership skills!

If you are interested in participating in this summer leadership training contact our Education/Training Director by emailing joe@glsenwa.org.

Why do we need Alive at 25?

Traffic crashes are the leading cause of teen fatalities, accounting for 44% of teen deaths in the U.S.

Solution? Encourage young drivers to take responsibility for their actions through an "Alive at 25" course.

This highly interactive 4 1/2 hour program encourages young drivers between the ages of 16 and 24 to take responsibility for their driving behavior. Skill practices and on-the-spot defensive driving techniques help change bravado to confidence.

Join teens at Vista Youth Center for a free "Alive at 25" class this Saturday, July 24th, at 3.30p. ... and don't miss the free pizza!

Day of Silence: April 25, 2008

What are you going to do to end the silence?

On April 25, students from middle school through college will join together to raise awareness of the "silencing" of GLTB youth through harassment and bullying.

Homegrown and student-led, the Day of Silence movement asks GLTB youth and their allies to take a vow of silence for a single day. By choosing not to speak, Day of Silence participants express the daily reality experienced by gay, lesbian, transgendered and bisexual youth.
